Monday’s meeting was arranged hurriedly after the US president met Putin in Alaska just three days earlier, and came away saying the onus was on Zelenskiy to end the three-year-old conflict.
“If everything works out well today, we’ll have a trilat,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with Zelenskiy. “We’re going to work with everybody, and we’re going to make sure that if there’s peace the peace is going to stay long term.”
Trump said he planned to hold a phone call with Putin following meetings with Zelenskiy and his European counterparts. The Ukrainian leader said he was also “ready for a trilateral” and that would be “a good signal.”
