Born to a Christian minister father and gospel singer mother, Joy experienced tremendous childhood trauma - from her mother's paranoid schizophrenia to sexual abuse at age three. After her mother's death, a grief-stricken Joy moved to Hollywood to pursue her artistic dreams, where Scientology's Celebrity Center found her at her most vulnerable: "I was beat up, tore up from the floor up," she shares candidly.
The pristine Celebrity Center castle, with its promises of spiritual technology and community, seemed like salvation to a young woman searching for belonging. "They loved me," Joy recalls. "They said, 'We need Scientologists like you. You're Black, you're Latina, you're an artist.'" Within weeks, she signed Scientology's infamous billion-year contract and entered the Sea Organization's boot camp.
Though Joy did not make it through that boot camp, she remained deeply entrenched in Scientology for years - marrying a wealthy Scientologist 21 years her senior, donating over $1 million to the organization, and even achieving fame after wearing a controversial Trump dress at the Grammy Awards. As her public profile grew, so did Scientology's control mechanisms. When she simply tweeted asking about Christian churches, she was immediately summoned for ethics handling: "My blood ran cold," she remembers.
The COVID-19 pandemic became her breaking point. Isolated at Saint Hill Manor in England, working 12-hour days with mounting depression, Joy reached out for help within Scientology only to be told to "watch a funny movie." In her darkest moment, she turned back to her Christian faith: "Jesus, help me," she prayed desperately.
Today, Joy has reclaimed her faith and freedom, writing a book titled "From Scientology to Christ: The Escape They Never Wanted Me to Make." Her powerful testimony serves both as warning about high-control organizations and inspiration that healing is possible, even after years of indoctrination.
