Republicans Support Their Selfish Interests, Not The Public Good

Cliff Schecter was a guest on The Mary Trump Show and talked about how for a democratic republic to thrive, there must be support for the common good. The Republican Party has spent years undermining this very concept by turning Americans against each other and elevating selfish interests from not paying taxes, to carrying guns in public to refusing to get vaccinated or wear masks.

The whole point of a republic if we believe in it is the common good, you know, and is that we all benefit this, you know, in the public square from doing good for other people. And this is what Republicans on the far right started tearing at with the whole, you know, I won't wear my mask. I mean, it started long before that, it started with, you know, a lot of it with guns and other things. But, you know, we're leaving, we're leaving behind that contract, you know, we don't, we don't care what the public good is. We're going to be selfish and do what's best for us, with taxes, with guns, with masks, with whatever it may be. And, and no, I thought she was so powerful there because again, I do think, I think people who have that privilege, look, I mean, i'm sitting here, I'm in Cincinnati Ohio. I'm a white straight guy. But I was on the board of planned parenthood here for two years fighting these fights. I hate bullies and they make me want to fight them and I, I guess I have a hard time understanding people that don't react that way.

You know, and so like, you know, Mike DeWine who may have been our governor who may have been a little bit better on covid and a few things has been awful on choice from the very beginning and, you know, has been awful on guns and so he's made me want to fight it out with him, you know, the entire time he's been here. So again we should all want to, to work together to fight these fights, they're all connected, you know. And, and whether we, that narrative that frame we put it under is the common good or it, you know, something else whatever it is you want to frame it, if we fight back against some of these battles we will win all of them eventually. If we ignore any of them, don't ignore, you know, when somebody calling you a pedophile. Don't think you can't win an argument over religion. I mean, it offends me like as an American, it offends me as a Democrat and frankly it offends me as a writer. As somebody who writes speeches let me, let, you know, a religion let me, let me sit here and tap into Thomas Jefferson and freedom of religion as the the bedrock, you know, foundation of this country and how you're attacking the sort of very premise of this country when you're saying that we need, we all must be Christian.
