Artificial Intelligence is changing all parts of our daily lives whether we are noticing it or not. Julia Sun discusses just how much of an impact there is by touching on artificial intelligence and its effect on American healthcare.
How can AI help doctors? The medical field has seen great improvements to their science thanks to artificial intelligence. AI allows doctors and nurse practitioners to prescribe the perfect dosage of medicine based on your genetic makeup. It’s no different than a wine algorithm recommending what wine you would like based on your tastes.
Can AI diagnose a patient? By relying on a genetic database, AI can also diagnose patients with illnesses even if the illness is super rare. This can save doctors a tremendous amount of time, because we all know doctors are busy. If the illness is super rare this means the doctor will have to look it up, and it takes time. Artificial Intelligence can greatly reduce the time needed to diagnose.
What are the pros and cons of artificial intelligence? Of course we know that this can happen with the healthcare system, and one example of a con is how a genetic database could be a privacy risk. One recent example is nTreatment. What is nTreatment? They are a company that manages electronic records for doctors. Recently they left thousands of patient’s lab results and histories exposed with one of its Microsoft servers allegedly not protected by any passwords.
Another con is that artificial intelligence can only reliably look at existing information. So if a disease is new or extremely rare, it may not be diagnosed correctly.
