You might have already heard about the situation in China with the Uyghur minority, but we’re here to break it down for you.
Who are the Uyghurs? Uyghurs are a Turkic ethnic group recognized as native in Northwestern China. They’re in the Xinjiang region which like Tebet is autonomous, meaning the region governs itself.
However, both regions face major restrictions from China, and in recent decades the central government promoted recent migration to Xinjiang.
The Uyghurs feel that their culture and their way of life are being threatened and the reality is that they are now a minority in their own territory.
The Chinese government is claiming that militant Uyghurs are running a violent campaign to be an independent state. In response, the Chinese government has detained more than 1 million Uyghurs in re-education camps in what they call is a response to terrorism.
While there haven’t been many claims of violent terrorism from militant Uyghurs there have been claims of mistreatment from China towards this minority population. Insiders are reporting mass sterilization and separation of Uyghur children from their families. And, there are claims of mass production of products being made in China, products that even arrive in the US, that are being made from forced Uyghur labor.
Before he left office, former secretary of state Mike Pompeo said, “I believe this Genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uyghurs by the Chinese party-state.”
Canada has also now recognized what’s going on in China as genocide.
