Today’s tough question: should children get vaccinated before they go back to school?
For this discussion, David Grasso is joined by Satya Marar, Contributor for Young Voices, and Dr. Sam Barone, Founder & Chief Medical Officer at Halodine LLC.
Marar starts off by saying that vaccinating kids before they go back to school just isn’t necessary because we shouldn’t have to wait that long before bringing them back to in-person learning. We know what the health risks are and how they can be managed, and we also know the mental health effects that students have been subjected to from remote learning, which is pretty terrible. The effects of remote learning has disproportionately affected students of color and students in impoverished backgrounds, and that is unacceptable.
Dr. Barone responds and says that the vaccine has been an immense public health undertaking and it's important to note how great it has been to get the vaccines into the hands of the people who need it. Although, the vaccine has only been studied on adults and we do not precisely know yet the effects of the vaccine on school aged children. We also know that vaccines are great for preventing disease, but when vaccinated it’s still possible to spread this disease even if the one spreading the disease isn’t getting sick.
