For Women’s History Month, we at Bold want to look at women in business through history, and female entrepreneurs. And the truth is there are too few to look toward.

Currently, when looking at businesses that start from venture capital, only about 3% of venture capital dollars flow to women-founded businesses. And only .67% of venture capital dollars flow to BIPOC and Latinx women-founded business.

And only 20 women in history have founded companies and brought them to an IPO.

What are the barriers keeping women from scaling their entrepreneurial ventures to the same size as men? Our guest for this Bold Business, Editor in Chief of Business Insider Alyson Shontell, has spent the last year examining this.

How do we change the current landscape? According to Shontell, there are some factors that women can’t control. The factors they can control include being very ambitious and aiming high in their careers. Shontell recently spoke to Julie Wainwright, founder of The RealReal, who said that so often the venture capital model can encourage women to just found what they know. And Jeff Bezos didn’t know anything about books or online shopping when he founded Amazon. We need women to be as ambitious as they possibly can, and to think they will be as successful as they possibly can.

We also need venture capital to shift, as part of the problem is that there aren't enough women in venture capital with a pile of money behind them, and only about 13% of decision makers in VC are women.
