We’re continuing to celebrate Women’s History Month here at Bold, by raising an important question.
More than ever we are seeing more American women in the workforce, but if these same women choose to be mothers, will a balance of a family and a successful career be possible?
To help us answer this, Julia is joined by Isabel Brown, spokesperson of Turning Point USA, and Democratic Strategist Nicole Brener Schmitz.
Nicole Brener Schmitz, a single mother with a successful career herself, starts off by saying that the US is far behind compared to other countries when it comes to paid maternity leave, and when women in the workforce want to have a family they don’t have to sacrifice their successful career.
Isabel Brown, who grew up with a stay-at-home father and mother who was the primary breadwinner, believes that solutions don’t necessarily come from Congress, but from how we as a country encourage young women to pursue their dreams. We need to encourage young women from the get go that having both a successful career, and a family is possible. We already have gender equality in America under the law, but we need to inspire young women without the need of the government.
Nicole Brener Schmitz agrees with Isabel Brown but says that what she grew up with isn’t the norm in America, and men need to understand that the emotional work and labor of raising a family isn’t solely the work of the mother on maternity leave. We need gender equality in what is expected in raising a family.
In the end, both women strongly agree that while they have different ideas on how to get there, they both want to see a world where it’s possible for all women in the workforce to know they can have a family, as well. It’s not a question of either-or.
