The conservative friendly social media app Parler is back after being removed off the Apple app store and Amazon Web Services. What does this say about the future of republicans on social media? Will they always be subject to deplatforming and internet censorship? This is a slippery slope we need to talk about.
Here to help us answer this question is AJ Swinson, Chief of Staff at the New Journey PAC, and Christian Watson, host of the “Pensive Politics” podcast.
AJ Swinson agrees that Parler isn’t perfect, but also argues that so isn’t Twitter. And yet Twitter was given a longer time to moderate their content whereas Parler wasn’t even up for a year before they were subject to deplatforming. It was an unfair standard and Parler wasn’t given any time to regulate or fix their issues.
Christian Watson mentioned that we’re also seeing Liberals being subject to deplatforming now as well as Conservatives, and some social justice platforms are getting cancelled. Internet Censorship applies to both sides, and both sides are getting hit hard.
How do we solve the issue of internet censorship and deplatforming? Should we regulate section 230 of the communications decency act?
What is Section 230? Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act says that social media platforms do not have to be held accountable for what users say or do on their platforms.
Swinson says that many conservatives, including former President Trump, say that Section 230 should be removed, but it would also remove those protections from platforms like Parler. The best option to correct something is the free market. This isn't an opportunity for the government to step in and do something themselves. If the government steps in, that could lead to a slippery slope.
