Let’s talk about inflation.
What is inflation? Inflation is when prices go up, and the value of your dollar goes down.
In the average year, the government tries to keep inflation at about 2%. Currently, people are worried the government is printing too much money, and that is going to cause massive inflation. To counter that, leaders are saying that there’s nothing to worry about, and if inflation doesn’t happen everything will be back to normal soon.
But is that true? Everything around you is expensive. Take college prices, for example. College tuition has inflated 50% in the past twenty years, and it’s expected to continue. One expert says to expect college prices to go up 5% each year. That’s double expected inflation!
Next is housing inflation and the housing market. Young people used to be able to afford buying their own housing, or at least rent on their own. Nowadays more and more young people are living with their parents because housing is just too expensive. Housing inflation has skyrocketed as the price of a house has gone up over $130,000 in the past 20 years.
Lastly, let’s talk buying bonds, or investing in bonds as you might’ve heard. What are bonds, you ask? Bonds are essentially you offering the government or a company your money. Buying bonds shows your trust in the strength of a certain company, or if it’s the government your belief in the strength in the American dollar.
So when a lot of people are investing in bonds, interest rates are low, and when people are not buying bonds, interest rates go up. In 2021, the interest rates are going up which is a signal that people aren’t buying. Why are people not investing in bonds? Inflation!
How are millennials and gen z expected to pay so much more than their parents or grandparents did?
