Stand up comedy was one of the fields hit hardest in our new normal. Joining us to tell her story of how she was able to stay afloat in comedy is a friend of Bold and NYC comedienne, Felicia Madison!
What was it like being unable to perform in stand up in 2020?
Like everyone else in the stand up comedy industry, Felicia Madison mentions how tough it was at first making a digital pivot when in person performances couldn’t happen anymore. Eventually, though, people began to get used to it and enjoy it for what it was. Madison also says she can’t wait to get back on stage.
What is the future of zoom stand up? Did zoom stand up work?
Zoom stand up, and other platforms, has had its pros. For instance the screen shows facial expressions of your audience, and it’s a bit easier to see everyone. When you’re on stage you really can only see the front row, but on Zoom you feel like you’re closer to the entire audience. Felicia Madison says this led to people coming back week after week for more shows. And Open Mic Night making a digital pivot online proved very successful.
What is the future of stand up comedy?
Felicia Madison says that stand up comedians are very resilient and creative, and will definitely be back. At the West Side Comedy Club, they’re currently about to open outdoor shows, but are looking forward to eventually have indoor shows in very very soon.
