The new Georgia voting laws required voters to provide identification with their absentee ballots, among other changes to the election process. Georgia is also the home to multiple major corporations, and some of these CEOs are speaking out against the new Georgia voting law. Included are the CEOs of both Coca Cola and Delta Air Lines who are opposed to the law, and the MLB just moved the MLB All Star game from Atlanta to Colorado.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke out in criticism of these corporations saying they should be wary of the “outrage industrial complex”. He says that businesses are acting like a “woke parallel government” and the American public doesn’t need businesses to react to every controversy.
However, in 2010 Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell supported the Citizens United ruling. What is Citizens United? This case at the Supreme Court ruled that corporations wouldn’t have a cap on the amount they can spend on an election, given they aren’t coordinating with any specific party or candidate. This essentially ruled corporations to be like people with first amendment rights.
