G7 Summit 2021 & Biden Travels To The UK & Belgium
President Biden has left for his first trip abroad since taking office, and it starts off with the G7 Summit. And the G doesn’t stand for Glorious Geeks...the G7 stands for “the group of 7” and is attended by the 7 largest advanced economies. Those are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, and the United States.
Biden is looking to center his foreign policy around the theme of reinforcing our international alliances, especially with countries that share democratic values, the argument being that if you strengthen your international alliances you can more effectively tackle global national security threats together.
After the G7 Summit 2021 in the UK, Biden is going to Belgium for the annual NATO Summit. What is NATO? NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and it includes 30 European and North American countries who are allied together in a defense pact, which means that if any one country’s threatened, the other countries come to their defense. Another move towards reinforcing international alliances by Biden.
VP Kamala Harris Travels To Guatemala Regarding Migration Surge
Vice President Kamala Harris recently traveled to Guatemala. She was tasked by President Biden to control a surge in migration at the Southern border, since the numbers are growing. The migration surge really started in April 2020, but took a sharp upward turn over the last few months. In fact, more than 178,000 migrants arrived at the Southern border this April - the highest one month total in more than two decades!
Kamala Harris traveled to learn more about the issue, and tried to convey some messages. While at Guatemala, she talked about how the US would help Central American citizens so they can “find hope at home,” and she strongly discouraged them from crossing into the United States at the Southern border.
