What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the annual celebration, and now federal holiday, to mark the end of slavery in the United States. Most people think slavery ended with President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863, but that’s not necessarily the case.
In Galveston, Texas, some slave owners had withheld this information from their slaves to the very last minute. But on June 19, 1863 Union Major General Gordon Granger enforced the news at Galveston, where some were waiting until government officials arrived.
Taxes started celebrating Juneteenth in 1866, but in 1980, Texas officially recognized the Juneteenth holiday. As of this year, 2021, Juneteenth is officially recognized as a federal holiday.
