Joining Shay Sayss today is Duante Brown Balenciaga, an entrepreneur, artist, and CEO of Devious Designz, a clothing line that he founded. Duante is here to talk to us about his clothing line, and the importance of activism in fashion.
Your designs are heavily influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement. Why do you think it’s so important to wear those designs, and incorporate them in fashion?
Duante says it’s for two reasons. One is the obvious reason that he wants to show the world the injustices that black and brown people face everyday. Secondly, he wants the world to see that the Black Lives Matter movement includes LGBTQ black lives.
You’ve been working with marginalized groups for a while. How did you get started.
Originally, Duante Brown Balenciaga worked in outreach with HIV/AIDS testing and prevention. He then left that and worked towards real estate, but was looking for a job that was more fulfilling, and that led to what he is doing today.
Duante Brown Balenciaga is also the East Coast father of the legendary house of Balenciaga that’s currently featured on Legendary season 2 on HBO Max.
How has being in the house of Balenciaga inspired Duante?
He joined the house over a decade prior thanks to the overall father of the house of Balenciaga, who also introduced Duante to the ballroom scene. And the ballroom scene is what helped Duante become the strong gay black man that he is today.
How can someone be an ally to the LGBTQ community, especially as we leave Pride Month 2021?
Duante says to speak up! Allies should reach out if they see something that is wrong and hurtful towards marginalized groups. Use your privilege to help other people.
