Joining Philip Michael and David Grasso today is Justin Renfro, Director of Partnerships at Wefunder. He’s here to talk to us about the importance of equity crowdfunding, and what equity crowdfunding is.
What is Equity Crowdfunding, and what is Wefunder?
According to Justin Renfro, Wefunder, the company currently with the largest share of equity crowdfunding, started back in 2012. Also, the message has been pretty clear from the start to democratize access to capital and raising capital.
This is through a two-sided marketplace. They have founders who need to raise capital, and they want to make sure there is a more equitable marketplace for founders to raise capital. And they also have investors who want access to private deals in silicon valley or elsewhere, really anywhere, in the US. For both ends of the marketplace, it’s all about equity in access.
Why Is The Current Marketplace Such An Opportunity For You?
When it comes to raising capital, money is almost always going to the same place, people, and industries. And according to Justin Renfro, this is extremely destructive because so many amazing and brilliant entrepreneurs are missing out on opportunities they deserve.
Entrepreneurship is a beautiful thing, and Justin has been helping entrepreneurs raise capital his entire career. And the work of entrepreneurs is so much more than the angel investment groups that funnel to just one or two locations. Wefunder makes sure that they look at entrepreneurship through as broad of a lens as possible.
What Is An Accredited Investor Vs A Non-Accredited Investor?
An Accredited Investor is a rich person worth more than $1 Million, to put it very simply. Prior to 2017, you could not make an investment in a private company unless you were an accredited investor. This concentrates venture capital to a small percentage of people.
