Both ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Space Jam’ have become huge hits during the COVID era. They have each made over $30 million at US theaters. Although, compared to pre-pandemic sales, they aren’t doing as well as blockbusters as big as these usually do.
Why? Movie theaters are blaming streaming services. Both movies were put onto their respective companies' streaming services: Disney + for ‘Black Widow’ and HBO Max for ‘Space Jam.’
And many people are choosing to stay home and stream the movies instead. In fact, Disney + has made $60 million on premiere access at-home viewing in the first weekend alone.
Can you blame people? With huge markups of movie theater chains, many people prefer the comfort of their own homes and their cheaper snacks.
The National Association of Theatre Owners criticized Disney and HBO by claiming their decisions are making everyone involved lose money by giving into the streaming wars.
But many people are still not comfortable with sitting in a crowded theater or just want to save some money.
