The White House has announced that student loan payments will continue to be on hold and have been pushed back until January 31, 2022. Politicians in President Joe Biden’s administration continue to advocate for more student loan forgiveness.
Politicians are taking this opportunity to emphasize that student debt widens an already existing racial wealth gap and lowers the amount of money we all have in our pockets.
Unfortunately, student loans are a trillion dollar problem. Many politicians are calling for large amounts of student loan forgiveness. But many doubt if President Joe Biden has the legal authority to do so without the support of the Congress.
Some say you can forgive one amount but another but the reality is that no one actually knows. Even if all the debt was forgiven, we would have the same problem in a few years.
Years ago, college was affordable but with student loans provided by the government, college tuition skyrocketed.
While student loan forgiveness is great, we need to address the root cause of the problem by reforming the system and making universities reform their broken model is an important part of the process.
