The city of Chicago is suing DoorDash and Grubhub for allegedly scamming their customers during the pandemic. Both companies were overcharging everyone using their services including customers, delivery drivers, and restaurant owners.
The lawsuit is against “unfair business practices” and “deceptive sales techniques.” Both of these food delivery apps are being sued for their bait and switch tactics. After advertising sales and lower prices, they would add fees at the end of the sale that would go to the companies.
Customers thought they were paying lower prices, drivers weren’t tipped for the added charges, and restaurant owners didn’t consent to the fees that concealed their lower prices. DoorDash went as far as administering a “Chicago Fee” insinuating that the city was administering the fine. It was not.
This seems to show that these companies aren’t helping smaller and struggling restaurants but in fact overcharging them.
If this is true, and these fees go directly to the companies and nothing to the drivers and restaurant owners, then as a consumer this seems not right. Why not keep the fees transparent instead of lying?
