Clean Beauty Expert Talks Government Regulations And How To Avoid Harmful Chemicals

Joining Shay Sayss today is a doctor, entrepreneur, and clean beauty expert who left her career in pharma to start her own beauty line, Dr. Liia Ramachandra. We talk all about skincare and clean beauty.

Why did you leave your career in pharma to pursue a beauty line?

Dr. Ramachandra is a pharmacist in additives and analytical chemistry and had worked in the pharmaceutical industry her whole professional life. She always dealt with psoriasis and then was diagnosed with non-celiac gluten sensitivity after her third child. After that, she tried doing clean diets but she still had red spots all over her face and body.

As a result, Dr. Ramachandra started paying attention to the ingredients that were in her skincare products and found many she shouldn’t be applying to her face and body. She decided to make her own skincare products in her kitchen and her face began to clear up. She started giving it to her friends and family too and they all wanted more.

So she had a decision to make: stay at her six figure pharmacy job or take a risk with starting her own business. She was about to turn 40 and realized if she didn’t do it then, she would never do it. So she took the jump and it was three years ago. She thinks it’s the best decision she ever made.

What does clean beauty mean to you?

In the past seven to ten years, Dr. Ramachandra has seen some great clean beauty brands come up like Beautycounter, Honest Company, and others. Europe has the ingredients in skincare products fairly regulated but the US isn’t there yet. So these companies are trying to make sure that even their products in the US are clean. Clean meaning no toxic or sickly chemical substances in the products. But Dr. Ramachandra thinks that clean beauty needs to take it a step further. Not only should products be free of toxic chemical substances but also medically unhealthy compounds like paraben, phthalates, gluten, and many others. “We know it’s not good to eat, so why is it in our skincare.” Dr. Ramachandra asks.

What is the US government doing to make our skincare products cleaner and safer?

In Europe, there is a long list of things that can’t be in products. In the US not so much. There are certain states like California that are passing laws in regards to this but it can sometimes take up to 5 years for them really to go into effect. Dr. Ramachandra believes that the answer may lie in the FDC, which is the Food Drug and Cosmetics Act (FDC), which is enforced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to Dr. Ramachandra, you can register with them but you don’t have to. She believes that there should be an approval process for skincare products in place. But Dr. Ramachandra believes there has been progress. For example, Valisure did a study with skin screen products and finding Benzene in them. She believes these products should put on their labels that these things are in their products or provide documentation that their products don’t have these materials in their products.
