Joining Philip Michael today is an email marketing expert and the Founder and creator of Deliverability Dashboard, Adrian Savage. We talk all about email marketing.
What benefits does email marketing have that social media marketing doesn’t have?
Unlike Twitter and other social media, with email, you have a lot more control over who you speak to, when you speak to them, how often you speak to them, and you can better tell if someone is engaging with you and/or listening to you. While many people say that email is dying, Savage believes that emails can be used with great success like 40% or more of your recipients opening your emails. And just like social media, it takes a bit of work. There’s also the plus of not having to worry about getting in trouble with Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media.
How do you achieve a 40% open rate?
In 2015-16, it was easier because you just created a massive email list and kept on emailing. Now, it’s more complicated than that. Google, Yahoo mail, and the likes don’t like when you send emails to a bunch of people who don’t open them. You are hurting yourself if you do this. So you should only be sending emails to people who opened things recently because every email that is opened is an advertisement that could be clicked for Gmail or Hotmail. The more your emails are opened, the more your reputation increases with the likes of Google, and the more likely they will go to inbox rather than spam.
How do you revive those who haven’t opened an email in a while?
If they aren’t opening the emails, the chances are they aren’t seeing them. This would mean that it is unlikely to revive because they won’t have it in their inboxes. What’s key is to spot people who are falling off the radar, sooner rather than later. If someone hasn’t opened an email in 30 days, then Savage would send an email to them asking if they are still interested. If after 60 days there is no response, ask them to confirm they are still interested and if not remove them to prevent hurting yourself. Savage says you can try getting 1 or 2% of those people back after 90 days, but by then it may be too late. It’s important to catch them right as they start to fall asleep.
Is email still a viable medium?
None of these are a bad way for monetizing. There are some people that use subscriptions to incentivize people to open their emails. Others use subscriptions to set up Facebook groups or other things but still use emails to check for engagement. What’s more important is to be pragmatic and to keep in touch with your customers, especially your paying customers.
