Epic Games, the video game studio behind the massively popular game Fortnite, is appealing a court ruling because of Apple’s hold on the app market. Back in 2020, Epic Games allowed customers to bypass Apple’s app store and buy things directly through Epic Games.
Apple found out about this and decided to remove the Fortnite app from the app store and halted its service on their Apple products. Epic Games sued in response claiming that Apple had a monopoly on the mobile app world.
If you didn’t know, Apple makes 15 to 30% of the gross sales of all app and in app purchases. Apple has an anti-steering policy, which prohibits developers from allowing customers to use a third party to purchase apps or app upgrades.
Epic Games had a win in court because a judge ruled that Apple can’t have this anti-steering rule in place. This means that now app developers have more opportunities to make money. But the judge denied that Apple has a monopoly and can have sole control over their app store.
