The extremely well-known recycling symbol is known to be on objects that are recyclable. But lawmakers are now claiming that this symbol is not accurate. According to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), not all objects marked with this recycling symbol are made to be recycled.
If you’re surprised by this, you’re not alone. More than two thirds of Americans, also incorrectly believed that all plastic items labeled with this symbol are recyclable.
In February of 2021, California lawmakers made it illegal to put the recycling symbol on any item that is not commonly or easily recycled. Oregon and New York are making a similar effort to more closely examine environmental labeling requiring packagers to be more responsible with their waste.
