All over the West Coast has been dealing with many wildfires. So, many West Coast people are introducing goats to their fields in an effort to prevent wildfires by reducing the number of fire prone plants in the area. Cities are contracting farmers to bring their goats to fields and areas with dense greenery.
But why goats? Unlike other grazing animals, goats can stand on their hind feet and reach higher and harder to reach branches of plants. They are also one of the few species that like to eat trees, bushes, and grass. Moreover, they can produce manure fertilizer that holds water and does not attract insects, which means these goats are not bringing flies to these cities.
You can not lose with goats, in fact, you are saving money with these goats. In 1997, about $500,000 was spent on fire suppressant and the number has grown to $400 million in 2020.
In addition to potentially reducing the amount of fire suppressant we need, goats also cut down on fossil fuels that we use for machinery and lawn equipment. While goats may seem out of place in a bustling city like San Francisco, they are reshaping the landscape and making it a safe and more fire-free city.
What do you think about the introduction of goats to cities? Let us know in the comments below!
