France Upset With US and Australia

France is really upset with the US and Australia, so much so that they recalled their ambassadors to the US and Australia. They did this in response to a defence past announcement between the US, UK, and Australian. Recalling an ambassador is a huge deal and is meant to represent great anger with something. This has happened for the first time in US-French relationship history.

So what’s this deal about? It included having Australia buy about $66 billion worth of nuclear powered submarines from the US in order to create some sort of balance of power and to beef up security in the Indo-Pacific region. France finds out about this through the press and Australia was originally supposed to buy these subs from France. As a result, French President Emmanuel Macron was extremely upset. This was a bad move on the Biden Administration’s part because it’s not a great way to deal with such an important US ally as France.

Here’s some more background. Australia already has 6 of these submarines but they are reaching the end of their life in 15 years. Five years ago, Australia chose France to replace those old submarines with new diesel-electric submarines. Now, the US, UK, and Australia, announced a trilateral security partnership called AUKUS. This deal is extremely important because it pushes back against China’s growing aggression in the region. To help explain this further, we brought in Misha Zelenskiy, an Australian trade unionist and Fulbright Scholar at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington DC.

United Nations General Assembly Round-Up

This was President Joe Biden’s first UNGA speech and it was a bit awkward. He said all the right things like working with our international partners, rebuilding alliances, and so on. Unfortunately, the world is currently upset with the US that the US administration didn’t work with the international community on the Afghanistan withdrawal. President Biden claimed that the US was shifting its focus to work with their allies and one of those first moves was the AUKUS.

In better UNGA news, the US announced the administration will be doubling the purchase of vaccines, which increases it to 1 billion doses that will be shipped worldwide. The goal is to vaccinate 70% of the population within the next year.

In other UNGA news, Brazil’s health minister tested positive for COVID after spending the day at the UN. China announced it would stop building coal plants in other countries. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson talked about something having to do with Kermit the Frog and climate change. Tunisia’s Foreign Minister is supposed to speak next week but it is uncertain after the Tunisian President just fired the entire government. The Taliban’s new foreign minister wanted to speak at the UN even though he is sanctioned by the UN. Luckily, he asked too late. Finally, the mega-famous KPOP boy band, BTS gave a speech encouraging people to get vaccinated and praising young people fighting for climate change. This speech got a shocking 6 million views.
