In July, Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old, went on a cross-country road trip in their van with her fiancee, Brian Laundrie. They documented their travel on Instagram. In August, Gabby uploaded her first YouTube video. Later that month, the FBI reported her missing and soon after the FBI discovered her remains in Wyoming. Now, her fiancee Brian Laundrie is missing.
This case was broadcasted on traditional news sites but what was new was social media’s participant in the case. In fact, they actually had a key part in the case.
One TikToker released a video claiming she picked up a hitchhiker who could have been the fiancee, Brian Laundrie. Other bloggers caught drone footage of Gabby’s van.
But what makes this story different from others? Why did this case gain so much traction from regular people? It’s probably because Millennials and Gen Zers are obsessed with true crime.
This obsession has driven the popularity of crime podcasts and Netflix shows. They shared their theories all over social media.
