035 RIP Colin Powell

RIP Colin Powell

The first Black US Secretary of State Colin Powell died of COVID complications at the age of 84 this week. Most people focus on his biggest mistake of getting the US to invade Iraq. He was raised in the South Bronx by his immigrant Jamaican parents. He joined ROTC and spent 35 years in the army and was a Vietnam vet. He rose to the rank of a four star general and was the first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He became well known after overseeing Operation Desert Storm in 1991, which was an operation in Kuwait pushing back against the Iraqi military that invaded it. Then the Powell Doctrine was born. He believed this was necessary for successful military action. Going to war should only be a last resort, should have broad public support, and if you’re going into war you have to go in tough and know how you are getting out. When President George W. Bush wanted to invade Iraq, Colin Powell was against the idea and correctly predicted how things would turn out if we invaded. He decided to stay, help, and try to make this war successful but as Secretary of State, he had to sell the war to the world as a good idea. This was when he made a speech at the UN alleging there was an alleged nuclear stockpile, which was based on faulty intelligence. Since then he has been open about his mistakes to ensure that others didn’t make the same mistakes he did.

Violence In Lebanon

There was a mass explosion last year when nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium exploded last year. Now a series of judges have been appointed to find the people who were responsible. The current judge has charged two people for negligence related to this blast They are two former ministers who are currently in the parliament and part of a Shia political party called Amal. There was gunfire at a protest they organized and they claim it was caused by Christian militia snipers. The new Lebanese Prime Minister has promised to get international financial aid to help with the investigation but this can only happen if the banks and government will have to agree to some major reforms.

17 Kidnapped In Haiti

16 Americans and 1 Canadian were kidnapped in Haiti this week while they were visiting an orphanage in an area controlled by a dangerous gang. Five children were included including an 8-month-old baby. Now, the gang is demanding a $1 million ransom per person, which amounts to $17 million altogether. Those who were kidnapped were part of a US nonprofit called Chrisitan Aid Ministries. They have been rebuilding homes since the August earthquake.
