Former PayPal CEO and current SpaceX and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk is now the wealthiest man to ever live. The UN Executive Director for the World Food Program, David Beasley is asking why billionaires like Musk aren’t doing more to help suffering people.
According to Beasley, it would only cost $6 billion to feed 42 million starving people. That would only be 2% of Elon Musk’s net worth. Musk and other billionaires often engage in philanthropic behavior so it would make sense for them to liquidate a portion of their assets to make an immense world impact. Elon Musk could solve world Hunger with only 2% of his net worth and other billionaires could also pitch in.
One thing to note is that these billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg don’t take a salary because their net worth is tied into ownership of the company. So when the company does well so does their personal fortune. So these billionaires have assets that leverage against it meaning you can take credit lines and loans against it. You have to pay interest.
The Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen believes the US government should tax billionaires on their unrealized capital gains and pay their ‘fair share.’
