What is this tradition and why do we do it?
A turkey has been given to the President since 1947 but was originally given to be eaten and not saved to never be eaten, otherwise known as pardoned.
The first Thanksgiving Thursday Turkey on record to be pardoned was in 1963 when President John F Kennedy received a 40-pound turkey with a sign around its neck that read, “Good Eating Mr. President,” but his response was “let’s keep him going,” Setting the presentation to a turkey to a farm became the norm under President Ronald Reagan, and the Turkey Pardon became a funny ritual for the media to cover. This year, Biden will pardon his first turkey from Jasper, Indiana.
