An ETF is a publicly traded company that you can invest in and then invest in a sector that you want. They then go out and research all of the large companies, trends, and so on for you so that you don't have to.
What is a common example of an exchange-traded fund (ETF)? Index funds. Index funds are those that are linked to a certain index, such as the S&P 500. So, what exactly do they do? They look at the top 500 companies in the S&P 500 in the economy. Then they choose which companies to invest in. You, as the investor, will obtain the average growth of all those companies in that one investment.
Some examples are VOO, QQQ, SPY, and IWF. They all pretty much do the same thing and they mirror the growth of the economy. This investment method is a favorite of Warren Buffet’s and he says when he dies the person running his trust should just simply run the ETFs and leave it like that. It's a great method to invest passively without having to perform all of the research and analysis yourself. As a result, this is a popular investment vehicle for high-net-worth individuals and those who prefer to invest passively. It's also something that many 401k programs do.
