Why are sports getting so political?
Many of us turn to sports to unwind. We enjoy watching players throw a ball around because it is entertaining, exhilarating, and frees us from the stresses of everyday life. But it appears that sports and politics are inextricably linked, whether it's kneeling during the national anthem, the NBA versus China, or social justice movements.
What is the reason for this? Athletes wield a great deal of power in the United States. Athletes now have a forum to communicate problems that are important to them, thanks to the widespread use of social media. It's impossible to avoid controversy when a well-known athlete expresses an unpopular opinion.
We only heard about stats and game results before the emergence of social media and 24-hour sports broadcasting. The media has been far more intrusive in recent years, with 24/7 commentary on the drama and politics. Sometimes, essential facts of what occurred in the games are skipped over.
Sports have become too political in recent years for some because it is impacting viewership. During the 2016 National Anthem protests over police brutality, one-third of football spectators stated they tuned out. Basketball enthusiasts stated they watched fewer NBA games during the Black Lives Matter Movement in 2020 because the league became too political. So there's a segment of the public that only watches the games and isn't interested in anything else. They don't want any politics.
Although the "shut up and dribble" crowd will continue to pound the table to keep politics out of sports, television numbers for practically every sport are rebounding because fans can't stay away forever.
