Yes, you can get back stolen crypto. Cryptocurrencies have blown up in value in popularity over the past decade and the crypto market is now worth several trillion dollars!
This is excellent news for investors, but it also attracts scammers' attention. Crypto criminals stole approximately $14 billion worth of cryptocurrency last year, according to CNBC. And, unlike traditional currencies, there is a means for authorities to recover your crypto if it is taken.
And crypto, such as Bitcoin, resides online in a digital ledger known as the blockchain, which assigns each block of crypto a unique ID known as the hash, which acts as a fingerprint for the network, allowing it to trace every single transaction involving each crypto block. Investigators may also trace the blockchain transactions to see where the money ends up, thanks to blockchain transparency.
After all, the thieves must be apprehended, and while this may appear to be a far shot, it is already happening. You can get your stolen crypto back as long as authorities keep getting smarter and tracking down the criminals. A couple of scammers were arrested in Manchester this week, according to Sky News, and £4 million (about $5.5 million) was returned to its owners.
The blockchain is used in England to verify the original owners. The stolen funds have been restored to fraud victims all across the world, including right here in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, and Europe. Imagine trying to locate your stolen funds in a different region of the planet. It would seem impossible but with crypto, it's entirely possible.
If you can return stolen crypto, does this encourage you or discourage you from investing in crypto? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
