For a long time, the NHL and Russia have been inextricably linked.
Since the early 2000s, the NHL has had a working connection with the Kontinental Hockey League, or KHL. The KHL is an international hockey league with teams primarily based in Russia, but also in China, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Many players begin their careers there before moving to the NHL in the United States. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the NHL cut ties with the KHL.
Furthermore, they terminated all business ties with Russia and eliminated Russia from consideration for future events.
Russia's relationship with the NHL is complicated. The NHL now has 41 Russian players, including some of the league's greatest names like Alex Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov, and Artemi Panarin.
What will happen to the several Russian players in the NHL as the United States continues to distance itself from Russia?
Of course, not everyone is supporting their home nation throughout the crisis, but those who are can face a slew of problems. Many individuals are pushing for Russian players who do not publicly oppose Russia and Vladimir Putin to be banned from the NHL.
