There is about to be a major shift in the way we watch sports at a bar.
A majority of bars and restaurants still use satellite tv because it's the easiest way to watch the same channel on all of your TVs and you don't have to rely on an internet connection.
However, now that major sports leagues are taking money from streamers to broadcast games, they will have to devise a new strategy.
If you're a Yankees fan in New York, every Friday night, you know the deal, the game is on Prime Video.
You can't watch the game at a bar if that bar has satellite TV. The same goes for any fan of a team on the weekly Apple Plus MLB showcase game.
If you live in the same city as your favorite team, as many people do, the game is blacked out on its usual channel.
Now the same issue is going to pop up come the NFL season. The NFL is moving Thursday night football to Amazon Prime this season, an event many people like to enjoy at a sports bar. And it seems like it's only going to get worse.
NFL RedZone, a service that allows you to watch the highlights of every football game at the same time is leaving Direct TV after this season and is looking for a streaming platform to partner with.
A lot of people specifically look for bars that offer this service and who's to say other popular services won't follow suit in the near future?
The bars and restaurants that rely on these services will either have to push back somehow or admit defeat and try to find another way to show the games.
Are you still going to a bar to catch the big game this season? How will this affect small businesses who are trying to broadcast these games? Let us know in the comments below
