Is censorship necessary on social media platforms? Unfortunately, it might be. Elon Musk is now done with the paperwork and is starting his hands-on approach to re-envisioning Twitter. In a tweet, Musk joked that people who had been censored were now "out of Twitter jail-" good for them.

But seriously: Elon can joke all he wants, but the truth is figuring out how to moderate Twitter's content is now all on him. In recent years, Twitter caught a lot of flack for censoring conservative voices on its platform much more often than liberal voices. And while it's wrong for censorship to target political ideology, the truth is that there has to be some limits on social media.

People are, of course, free to say whatever they want, but internet interactions add layers to free speech that just don't happen in real life. Even the Twitter parallels that conservatives flock to, like Parler or Truth Social, have some content moderation on their sites. We'll see how long Elon can keep up the carefree persona before he inevitably rolls out his own content moderation plan.
