The Homelessness Epidemic In America

Homelessness is an epidemic that touches nearly every city in America. It's a crisis that exposes all the failings of our society and government, as it's difficult to identify practical solutions to this painful humanitarian crisis.

The root of the problem? Housing prices. The average home price has increased by over $200,000 nationwide in the past decade, making homeownership out of reach for many Americans in California, of course, is ground zero for the crisis.

And while the state has spent billions, if you visit San Francisco or Los Angeles, you can see that existing programs aren't doing enough. So how do we help our fellow Americans who are unhoused? There are proposals to use federal healthcare dollars through Medicaid to help people who are homeless get shelter.

Others are calling for more direct help for people who are unhoused and have addictions. Helping people who are homeless is the right thing to do, but it also makes financial sense as well.

The government estimates that it costs taxpayers approximately $40,000 a year for a person to live on the streets. The present crisis is unsustainable for everyone, and we desperately need to identify solutions to help our fellow citizens and protect our quality of life in America's biggest cities.
