as posted by the channelIf you get stranded by an airline, you need to be aware of these new rules being put into place. The Biden Administration is requiring compensation for airline cancellations or long delays, as well as meal vouchers and overnight accommodations.
Also, they're requiring prompt customer service when you get stranded. Now, while all of this is good, the Biden administration's plan just puts a band-aid on an industry that desperately needs disruption and more competition.
What America really needs is a more competitive airline industry. That would bring prices down and help restore humane customer service. Let's face it: prices are crazy and service is bad because government policies like COVID bailouts and mergers have created mega airlines that just really don't care.
The government has allowed the creation of airline monopolies as there are only really four major airlines in America today; Southwest, United, American and Delta. Together these super airlines control two-thirds of the market in America.
And when you have a monopoly, you really have little incentive to offer a good service, and you have the market power to charge really high prices. The market concentration of airlines in America is really bad. Let me give you an example:
If you live in Charlotte, North Carolina, American Airlines controls 90% of flights. United controls 78% of Houston and Delta controls 71% of Atlanta. And all these mega airlines have also gutted service to Middle America and smaller cities creating a flyover country that is disconnected from bicoastal prosperity.
If the Biden administration wants to make our national flying experience better, they should incentivize the creation of new airlines to make markets more competitive.
