"Fatal Shooting of Pregnant Woman at Kroger Parking Lot Raises Concerns and Questions"

A 21-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Ta’kiya Young by the Franklin County Coroner's Office, was shot and killed by a Blendon Township police officer in the parking lot of a Kroger store located at 5991 Sunbury Road in Columbus, Ohio.

The incident occurred when two officers were initially responding to assist a driver who had been locked out of her car. Simultaneously, a Kroger employee informed one of the officers that someone had stolen bottles of alcohol from the store and was in the process of leaving the area.

The theft suspect, later identified as Ta’kiya Young, was pointed out by the employee. Young was sitting in a parked Lexus with no license plate outside of the store.

As the officers approached the vehicle, Young started the car. One officer positioned himself by the driver's side door, while another officer stood directly in front of the car. Both officers repeatedly instructed Young to exit the vehicle, but she did not comply.

Young then put the car in gear and drove forward. The officer in front of the car fired a single shot through the windshield, striking Young.

The car continued moving for approximately 50 feet before coming to a stop outside of the walk-up pharmacy. Officers broke the driver's window to extract Young from the vehicle and provide medical assistance. She was transported to St. Ann's Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Store employees later reported that several suspects were involved in stealing items but fled the scene in different vehicles.

Both officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
