11:53Now PlayingIn the early morning hours of May 16, 2025, ten inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans. They reportedly took advantage of faulty cell locks and a hole behind a toilet to break out. From there, they navigated through a loading dock, scaled a wall, and made it across Interstate 10. Graffiti left behind at the escape site mocked security, with phrases like “Too Easy LOL” and “We Innocent.”
Shockingly, the escape went unnoticed until a routine headcount around 8:30 a.m. later that day. Investigations later revealed that a jail maintenance worker had allegedly helped facilitate the escape by shutting off the water supply to a toilet, which played a critical role in how the inmates got out.
As of now, eight of the escapees have been recaptured. Two are still at large — Antoine Massey, believed to be one of the masterminds behind the escape, and Derrick Groves, who was convicted of a double murder. Law enforcement agencies have upped the reward to $50,000 each for any information leading to their capture.
This high-profile breakout has led to serious questions about security protocols, infrastructure issues, and staffing shortages within the jail. The sheriff has acknowledged the facility’s vulnerabilities and has not ruled out the possibility of inside help beyond the maintenance worker already arrested.
Authorities continue their manhunt, urging the public to stay alert and report any tips as they work to bring the remaining escapees back into custody.
