A routine expired-tag traffic stop in Willoughby Hills, Ohio turned into something much bigger than anyone expected.

At first, the driver and passenger told police they were homeless, living out of the car, trying to get into Planet Fitness to shower, and traveling with a cat inside the vehicle. It looked like a sad situation involving two people down on their luck.

But the stop changed when officers could not clearly identify the female passenger, the driver started questioning why they were being asked to step out, and police prepared to run a K9 around the vehicle. Moments later, the car took off.

What followed was a dangerous pursuit, damaged tires, items allegedly being thrown from the vehicle, a crash, reported carjacking attempts, and multiple felony-level allegations connected to the driver. The female passenger was also investigated and later booked in a separate police matter involving drug-related and obstruction-related allegations.
