YouTube Description
as posted by the channelFour women were arrested at the Texas Capitol this week after spending the night in protest against the GOP’s push to pass new racist, gerrymandered voting maps ahead of the Congressional midterms next year.
Republicans made Democrats sign “permission slips” to leave the Capitol, which would put them under 24/7 police watch in order to return to the state’s House floor.
Only one state legislator, Rep. Nicole Collier, former head of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, refused to sign and instead slept at her desk. Those who stayed there in solidarity were arrested and subsequently banned from Capitol grounds for a year.
The House approved the gerrymandered maps on Wednesday. The vote was delayed for two weeks by a group of Democratic lawmakers who fled the state, but ultimately almost all returned under threat of arrest. The redistricting passed the State Senate late last night.
