Long lines at overstrained food banks and community kitchens across the country have left many families skipping a big feast this Thanksgiving. Despite the restoration of SNAP funding on November 12, many of the country’s 42 million people who rely on federal food assistance did not see prompt payments due to discrepancies in state schedules and technical issues that USDA officials warned could take weeks to resolve.
Additional cuts to the program signed into law by Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill earlier this year will see millions kicked off the program completely in the coming months.
“It is the community that is filling in the gaps,” organizer Ashley Robbins, working with Feed Durham, told BT. “It’s not the government.”
