They then replaced the experienced union staff with scabs, who workers say are creating unsafe conditions at the refinery and surrounding areas.
But the Chicago community is fighting back.
Hundreds – including reps from the Chicago Teachers Union and local community groups – showed up on Friday at a solidarity rally for the workers, who continue to demand a fair contract and an end to BP's union-busting.
