29:49Now PlayingA major election controversy is unfolding after New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill disclosed that a software error led to approximately 6,600 people who indicated they were not U.S. citizens being mistakenly registered to vote between 2023 and 2024. The governor's office says preliminary findings show fewer than 400 of those individuals cast ballots before the error was discovered and that the registrations are being removed while an investigation continues.
The disclosure has intensified the national debate over election security and renewed calls from supporters of the SAVE Act, which would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Supporters argue the legislation would help prevent similar incidents, while opponents contend it could create barriers for eligible voters.
In this video, we break down:
What New Jersey officials say happened.
What the SAVE Act would do.
The arguments from supporters and opponents.
What this means for election policy heading into future elections.
What do you think? Should Congress pass the SAVE Act, or are existing safeguards sufficient? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
