You guys asked me to review this latest video from Manifestelle. She pushes back on the lazy narrative that frames women as the primary drivers of consumer excess, but the conversation doesn’t end there. While it’s true that overconsumption is structurally produced by capitalism, marketing, and corporate incentives, pretending gender plays no role at all flattens the issue. Women are disproportionately targeted, shamed, and moralized for consumption in ways men simply aren’t, especially in beauty, fashion, and “self-care” economies. While male-dominated forms of overconsumption are normalized or reframed as status, success, or hobbies. This video opens an important door, but the real question is how misogyny, capitalism, and consumer culture work together to individualize blame onto women while protecting the systems (and men) that profit most.
