Muslim world condemns Macron, France over treatment of Islam. Leaders and groups across Muslim world join debate as protests erupt, while Europe stands by Macron and criticises Turkey. The backlash over French President Emmanuel Macron’s critique of Islam has intensified after Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan questioned his counterpart’s mental health, while Muslims in several countries are demanding a boycott of France. Marking his second sharp criticism against Macron in two days, Erdogan said on Sunday that the French president had “lost his mind”, prompting France’s foreign minister to recall the country’s ambassador in Ankara.
Pakistan says Macron ‘encourages Islamophobia’, summons envoy. Islamabad summons French ambassador in Pakistan to issue rebuke on French president’s recent comments regarding Islam. Pakistan has summoned France’s ambassador in Islamabad to express its deep concerns over what it called “systematic … Islamophobic acts” in the European country. Ambassador Marc Barety was summoned to the foreign office in Pakistan’s capital on Monday morning, a day after Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for “encourag[ing] Islamophobia”.
Saudi Arabia condemns attempts to ‘link Islam with terrorism’. Saudi statement comes as anger grows in the Muslim world over publications of cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad in France. Saudi Arabia has said it “rejects any attempt to link Islam with terrorism, and condemns the offensive cartoons of the Prophet” amid an escalating row between France and some Muslimmajority nations over Paris’s support for the right to caricature the Prophet. Its government also called for “intellectual and cultural freedom to be a beacon of respect, tolerance and peace that rejects practices and acts which generate hatred, violence and extremism and are contrary to the values of coexistence,” a Saudi foreign ministry official told state media on Tuesday.
