On August 11, 2017, a routine flight in a Piper PA-31T Cheyenne turned into a high-stakes emergency when pilot Charles Schindler experienced a cascade of system failures—including a stuck autopilot, loss of pitch control, and hydraulic issues. For hours, Schindler flew the aircraft manually using only engine thrust to steer, after being unable to disengage the autopilot at 6,000 feet.
In this episode, Captain Steeeve walks through the incredible story of how Schindler—using his knees and his wits—navigated his way back to Greenwood, Mississippi. With help from an incredible team at Memphis Center, who were later awarded the Archie League Medal of Safety, this pilot brought his aircraft safely to the ground.
We break down the systems involved, how control failures can snowball, and what makes this case a prime example of calm under pressure and teamwork between pilot and ATC.
🛩️ If you've ever wondered what pilots do when everything goes wrong—this is that story.
