CORRECTION: The NTSB concluded that the blaze originated in the forward Class D cargo compartment due to the inadvertent activation of unexpended chemical oxygen generators—hazardous COMAT (company-owned material), mislabeled and improperly handled. Lithium batteries were NOT the cause of this fire.
United Airlines Flight UA1122, a Boeing 787-9 bound from Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT), was forced to return to Newark on August 3, 2025, after reports of smoke in the cabin and cockpit shortly after departure.
The crew declared an emergency, dumped fuel over the Atlantic to reach a safe landing weight, and landed safely back at Newark about 90 minutes after takeoff. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and passengers were rebooked on another flight.
In this video, Captain Steeeve breaks down:
What happened onboard UA1122
Why crews dump fuel during emergencies
How pilots handle smoke in the cockpit
What safety measures are in place for passengers
