Air Force One, carrying the President on a state visit to the UK, had a close encounter with Spirit Airlines Flight 1300 while flying over Long Island, New York.
ATC repeatedly instructed the Spirit pilots to turn 20 degrees to maintain safe separation from Air Force One’s Boeing 747. The controller’s frustration became clear, warning the pilots to “pay attention” and even joking about them being “on the iPad.”
In this video, Captain Steeeve breaks down exactly what happened:
- What ATC separation requirements are when Air Force One is in the air.
- How Spirit 1300 got close — and why ATC stepped in quickly.
- Why the controller’s comments show just how seriously these situations are taken.
Fortunately, separation was never lost, and both flights continued without incident. Still, the moment shows how professionalism and quick responses keep our skies safe.
