Host Michael Hingston visits the home of Emily Riddle, Nehiyaw writer and Senior Advisor on Indigenous Relations for the Edmonton Public Library. Her bookshelf is sorted not by author name, but by colour, creating a vibrant rainbow on her bookshelf. Her collection includes Thrasher - Skid Row Eskimo, a rare out-of-print autobiography written by an imprisoned Inuk man convicted of manslaughter in a Calgary jail.

Emily Riddle (Okimâw Pipikwan Iskwêw) is Nehiyaw and a member of the Alexander First Nation (Kipohtakaw). A writer, library worker, editor, language learner, and visual artist, she lives in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton). Her writing has been published in The Globe and Mail, Teen Vogue, the Malahat Review, and Room Magazine, among others. In 2021, she was picked for a Writers' Trust mentorship with Joshua Whitehead. During this mentorship she completed her debut book The Big Melt which was published by Nightwood Editions in fall 2022. She is a board member for The Yellowhead Institute and the Latitude 53 Contemporary Arts Centre. In 2020, she was shortlisted for the CBC Prize and in 2021 was awarded the Edmonton Artists’ Trust Award. She sits on editorial boards for Coach House Books and GUTS Magazine.
